Adapting a Grading Rubric for a Processing-Speed Accommodation Without Lowering the Bar

Extended time isn't the only accommodation a rubric needs to honor. Here's how to adjust what you're grading for a processing-speed IEP without quietly grading a different assignment.

A student with a processing-speed accommodation gets extended time on the test. That part's easy - it's written on the IEP, the front office reminds you, and you build it into the schedule. What's harder is the rubric they're graded against once the extra time runs out, because a standard rubric usually measures two things at once: what the student understood, and how much they produced in a fixed window. Extended time fixes the second problem. It does nothing for a rubric that's still quietly counting words, steps shown, or number of examples cited as a proxy for mastery.

What processing speed actually slows down

Processing speed doesn't affect what a student knows - it affects how fast they can retrieve it, organize it, and put it on paper. A student with a real, deep understanding of photosynthesis can still turn in a shorter paragraph than a faster-writing classmate who understands it less. If your rubric rewards length or volume as a stand-in for depth, you're grading speed twice: once with the clock, and again with the criteria.

Separating "depth" criteria from "volume" criteria

Before you touch the rubric, sort its existing rows into two piles:

1. Depth criteria - accuracy, reasoning, use of evidence, correct terminology. These should stay identical for every student, accommodated or not. Lowering these is lowering the bar.
2. Volume criteria - number of paragraphs, number of examples, word count minimums, number of steps shown per problem. These are where an accommodation belongs.

A rubric row that says "cites four pieces of evidence" is a volume criterion wearing a depth costume. The real depth question is whether the evidence cited is accurate and relevant - a student can meet that bar with two well-chosen citations as easily as four rushed ones.

Building the adapted rubric with AI as the first draft

Once you've sorted the rows, a fast way to draft the adapted version is to hand the model both piles and ask it to rebuild the volume side around quality instead of quantity. Try:

  • "Here's my rubric for this essay: [paste rubric]. This student has a processing-speed IEP goal around output volume, not comprehension. Rewrite only the criteria that measure quantity (word count, number of examples) so they measure quality of the same skill instead. Keep every depth/accuracy criterion exactly as written."

A quick before/after

Before: "Includes 3 supporting details, minimum 250 words, cites 2 sources."

After: "Includes at least 1 supporting detail per claim, with each detail clearly accurate and relevant. Cites at least 1 source correctly. Length is not scored directly."

Same rigor on accuracy and sourcing. Zero penalty for a shorter, slower-produced answer that gets there.

Keeping it consistent with the IEP goal, not just the assignment

Pull the actual language from the student's IEP goal - most processing-speed goals reference something like "will produce grade-level written responses with reduced output demands while maintaining content accuracy." Cross-check your rubric against that language directly through the [sped IEP tool](/sped-iep) so the accommodation on paper matches what you're actually grading, not just what feels reasonable in the moment. A mismatch here is the kind of thing that surfaces in an IEP meeting as "the accommodation isn't being implemented," even when your intent was right.

What still needs your judgment

  • Don't over-correct. Cutting volume requirements shouldn't turn into cutting depth requirements by accident - reread the adapted rubric cold and check every row still measures something real.
  • Tell the student what changed. A rubric adaptation that's invisible to the student doesn't help them self-advocate later. Show them the before and after in plain language.
  • Revisit each unit. A rubric adaptation built for a persuasive essay doesn't automatically transfer to a lab report - the volume-vs-depth split looks different in every format, so redo this sort each time, even if it only takes a few minutes once you know the pattern.
