AI for Students Who Learn Differently: Dyslexia, ADHD, and Processing Speed

Accessibility isn't an add-on. Here's how AI can actually help the kids who struggle with standard instruction.

You have a kid with dyslexia. Text gets scrambled. She reads slower than peers. She's smart—her brain just processes written words differently. The textbook and the test are both walls.

AI doesn't fix dyslexia. But it can move the wall.

For students with dyslexia

What helps: text-to-speech that actually sounds human. Not the robotic screen reader. The natural, variable-speed voice that makes reading less work.

Most AI tools now have this built in. Paste the passage, hit "read aloud," listen. If the kid has an iPad or laptop, this runs anywhere—at home, in the library, in the exam room if it's allowed.

The real power: combine it with a read-along PDF. Kid hears the word *and* sees it. The dual input (audio + visual) rewires the processing pathway. After a while, the scrambling stops happening as much.

What NOT to do: don't use AI to replace reading instruction. This is accommodation, not avoidance. The kid still needs phonics, word study, decoding practice. But she also needs *not* to burn her cognitive energy just on decoding when she should be learning content.

What helps: AI that breaks instructions into smaller chunks.

What works: ask an AI tool to break your instruction into numbered steps, each one a single sentence.

"Rewrite this direction into 5 small steps, each one is ONE action. Keep the language simple and direct."

You write: "Read the passage about photosynthesis, find three new words you don't know, write them down, look them up, and write one sentence using each word."

The AI gives you:
1. Read the passage about photosynthesis.
2. Find three words you don't know. Write them down.
3. Look up each word.
4. Write one sentence using each word.

Same work, but now it fits in working memory. The kid doesn't lose the thread.

Then, have a visual checklist. Not a textual list—numbered boxes the kid can physically check off. Done = cleared cognitive load = moved on to next.

For students with slow processing speed

What helps: more think-time. AI can give it.

A kid with slow processing hears a question. Needs 5 seconds to think. By then, three classmates have blurted the answer. She didn't get to think.

What works: give her a written prompt from the AI tool before class. Let her think ahead.

"I'm going to ask the class 'Why did the American Revolution succeed when other revolutions failed?' Jot down your thoughts right now. You don't have to be right—just write something."

She thinks at her pace. Writes her ideas. When you ask the question in class, she's already warm. She can contribute *her* thought, not rush a first-draft one.

Or: use an AI-generated study guide the night before. She can look up answers, organize her thinking, come to class ready. The discussion becomes refinement, not first-encounter.

The thing to remember

These tools work because they remove the format barrier but keep the thinking intact. A kid with dyslexia still learns to read—text-to-speech just removes the scramble. A kid with ADHD still plans their work—numbered steps just remove the hold-all-five-steps-in-your-head part. A kid with slow processing still thinks—but on their clock, not the class clock.

That's accommodation. That's respect. That's also how you unlock potential that the kid didn't know was there.
