You want to dedicate one full class period to "exploring AI." Not an assignment. Not a lesson. Just: try some tools, see what happens, think about how you'd use them.
On paper, it sounds great. In reality, you walk in and 15 kids are googling random AI tools, 5 are stuck because they forgot their passwords, 3 are reading Reddit instead, and 2 are asleep.
Here's the structure that actually works.
The 45-minute structure
Minutes 0–5: What we're doing today
- Show the class one AI tool (ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini—pick one)
- Ask: "What do you think this can do?"
- Show it answering one question (something relatable, like "plan a pizza party for 50 people under $200")
- Say: "Today you're going to explore three different AI tools and decide which one you'd actually use. You're looking for: Is it easy to use? Do you trust the output? What's it good for?"
Minutes 5–10: Model one tool fully
- Have everyone open the same tool on their device
- Do one demo question together ("Write a funny short story about a teacher who discovers they're a time traveler")
- Ask students what they notice: "Is it fast? Did the story make sense? Was it good?"
- You're not teaching; you're showing what "trying a tool" looks like
Minutes 10–35: Rotation
- Divide students into 3 groups
- Each group has one tool (AI tool #1, #2, #3)
- Rotation 1 (minutes 10–16): Group A on Tool A, Group B on Tool B, Group C on Tool C
- Rotation 2 (minutes 17–23): Rotate
- Rotation 3 (minutes 24–30): Rotate
- Everyone tries all three tools
For each tool, students get one card with 3 questions:
1. "Ask this tool a question that matters to you (not 'what's AI'—real questions)"
2. "Is the answer useful? Fast? Confusing?"
3. "When would you actually use this tool?"
They write one-sentence answers on the card. That's it. Not a formal report. Just thinking.
Minutes 30–35: Debrief
- Whole group: "Which tool did you like? Why?"
- Listen. Don't lecture.
- You'll hear: "This one was faster." "This one understood what I meant better." "This one let me ask follow-up questions."
- That's the conversation. You're learning what students found valuable.
Minutes 35–45: What's next
- "So now you know AI tools exist and what they can do. Next lesson, we're going to use one of these for [your actual assignment]."
- Or: "You don't have to use AI for assignments in this class, but these tools are available if you want to try them for [specific task]."
- Say it clearly. No surprises later.
The card that makes this work
Don't give them a rubric. Give them three simple questions on a notecard:

That's it. They can answer in one sentence each. It's not a quiz; it's a thinking prompt.
Collect the cards. You now have data on what each student found useful. Use that data next lesson: "Most of you said Tool B was easiest to understand, so that's what we're using next."
The trouble spots and how to fix them
"My WiFi can't handle it"
- Do it with one device. You project from your laptop, students watch and direct you. ("Ask it to write a poem about homework!")
- Same learning, no bandwidth issue
"Students finish in 5 minutes and then sit around"
- Have a second set of questions on the back of the card: "If you wanted to lie to this AI tool, what's something you could trick it with?" (Kids love this and it teaches critical thinking.)
- Or: "Try asking it the same question two different ways and compare the answers"
"One group gets stuck on a tool"
- You're circulating (not giving a lecture elsewhere), so you notice quick. "Reset and try a different question" keeps them moving.
"Students use the tool for stuff that's not learning"
- Expected. That's why you're watching. One reminder: "That's interesting, but today we're testing tools for [this kind of task]." They move on.
The classroom culture this builds
When you structure it this way, you're not saying "AI is magic" or "AI is dangerous." You're saying "AI tools exist, they have limitations, and we're going to explore what they're good for."
Students try them. They get bored or impressed on their own terms. They ask questions you didn't expect. They discover that one tool is better for writing and another is better for math.
That's the whole goal. Not to be AI experts. To understand what these tools are actually for.
The next step
After an AI lab day, students have baseline knowledge. Now you can say in future lessons:
- "You've tried ChatGPT before, so you know how prompts work"
- "Remember that Tool B was good for brainstorming? Use that for [assignment]"
- "You know AI can make mistakes, so [this is how we fact-check it]"
They're not afraid of the tools anymore. They've tried them. That changes everything.
