A student finishes the assignment in twelve minutes while the rest of the class needs thirty. The easiest response is five more problems just like the first twenty. It's also the response most likely to teach that student the wrong lesson: that finishing early gets you *more of the same*, not something more interesting. Within a few weeks, kids who could finish fast learn to pace themselves down to avoid the penalty of extra, identical work. That's not laziness, it's a rational response to how the classroom has trained them to behave.
More work and harder work are not the same thing
"More" means quantity: extra problems, extra pages, extra time on task. "Harder" means depth: the same core idea, pushed further, applied somewhere less obvious, or examined from an angle the original assignment didn't ask about. A gifted student who's mastered a skill doesn't need to practice it eight more times. They need a version of the task that requires more thinking, not more time.
1. Add a constraint that changes the problem, rather than adding more problems, "solve it again, but you can't use the method you just used" turns a finished worksheet into a genuine second task
2. Ask for transfer, not repetition, apply the same concept to a real, messier context instead of another clean textbook example
3. Ask them to teach it, explaining a concept clearly enough for a struggling classmate to understand is genuinely harder than solving one more problem, and it has a real classroom benefit besides
Build the extension into the plan, not into the moment
If you only think about the fast-finisher problem at the moment it happens, you'll default to "here, do more of this" because there's no time to invent something better on the spot. Build the extension task when you build the original lesson, so it's ready the second someone needs it.

Watch for the kid who's coasting, not just the one who's obviously ahead
Some gifted students are easy to spot, they finish fast and ask for more. Others learn early that coasting is safer than being handed extra work, and they quietly do the minimum required to stay unnoticed. A quick way to check: give an occasional low-stakes, genuinely hard optional problem and see who engages with it privately, on paper, without being asked to. The students who light up at a real challenge but never raise their hand for it are often the ones your default "more of the same" approach has already taught to hide.
Keeping it sustainable across a whole class
- Build 2-3 tiered extension tasks per unit in advance, not one improvised on the spot
- Let students choose their extension rather than assigning the same one to every fast finisher, choice keeps it from feeling like a second assignment imposed on them
- Track which extensions actually got picked and engaged with, not just handed out, that tells you which ones were genuinely more interesting versus just more schoolwork in a different shape
