You're in a weird position if you teach in 2026. You're supposed to teach students how to use AI well. But you're also learning this yourself, often in real time, often without formal training. The temptation is to feel like you have to master it first before you teach it. But that's backward. Your students are learning to learn with AI, and the most powerful thing you can model is exactly that: learning alongside them.
The learner-teacher move
Here's what actually works: you tell students the truth.
"I'm learning this too. I use AI. I still make mistakes with prompts. I still get surprised by what it does. I'm figuring out what's worth using it for and what it actually makes worse. You're going to do the same thing. Let's figure it out together."
That sentence does three things:
1. It admits you don't have all the answers (which builds trust)
2. It frames AI as something to learn WITH, not just learn ABOUT
3. It positions failure and iteration as normal—which is the actual skill they need
What learning with AI actually looks like
You're planning a unit on [whatever]. You ask an AI: "Build me an outline for teaching [topic] to [grade level]." You read it. Parts of it are good. Parts are generic or miss the mark. You show your class:
"Here's what I asked an AI to do. Here's what it gave me. What's useful here? What's missing? What would you change?"
Now your students are seeing you think critically about AI output. They're learning to evaluate, not just use. And you're learning too, because their questions often point out things you missed.
The experiment mindset
Teaching with AI is, right now, experimental. You don't know if a particular tool will help or distract. You try it. You see what happens. You adjust.
Model that:
- "I tried using this tool in [context]. Here's what I thought would happen. Here's what actually happened. It didn't work the way I expected. So I'm trying a different approach next time."
- Or: "This is way more useful than I thought. Here's why I was wrong about it."
That's not admitting defeat. That's showing how learning actually works. Your students see that knowing things isn't about being right from the start; it's about trying, observing, adjusting.
Learning from the students
Here's the thing: your students often know more about specific tools than you do. Some of them have been using AI since they were 12. They've tried things. They know shortcuts. They've hit walls.
Use that.
"You all know ChatGPT better than I do. Show me what you know. What do you do when the first prompt doesn't work? What are you using it for outside of school? What do you trust it with and what do you not?"
You're not abdicating expertise. You're acknowledging that this is a domain where expertise is distributed. You have the judgment and the context (pedagogical knowledge, how your classroom works, what your standards demand). They have hands-on experience. Together, you learn more.
Staying honest about limits
Part of growing as a teacher using AI is getting clearer about what it's actually good for in your context. And being willing to say: "This isn't helpful in my classroom."
Some tools that everyone raves about might not fit your teaching. That's OK. You don't have to use them.
Model this too: "Everyone says to use [tool], but in our classroom, it makes [specific problem]. So we're not using it. Here's what we're using instead."
Your judgment about what works in YOUR room is more valuable than the hype.
The growth part
The real learning for you isn't mastering the tool. It's figuring out:
- What kind of thinking does AI amplify in your students?
- What kind does it shortcut or replace?
- Where do you draw the line?
- How does this fit into what you believe about teaching?
Those are the questions that make you a better teacher, not just a better AI user.
One more move: share what you're learning
Connect with other teachers. Share what's working and what's not. A lot of teachers are in this liminal space right now—using AI but uncertain about it. Your specific classroom experiments matter.
Write about it. Present it. Join the communities of teachers thinking about this. You're not just learning to teach your students; you're contributing to how this whole profession figures out AI.
Real talk
You don't have to be ahead of your students. You just have to be curious alongside them. That's the move: not "I'm the master of AI and I'll teach you," but "We're in this moment where this tool is new to all of us. I have some context and expertise. You have some too. Let's learn together."
That's not just good teaching. That's the only honest way to teach something you're still learning yourself.
