You've picked an AI tool for your class. But then another teacher recommends a different one, a student found a tool that does exactly what they need, and now you have three tools active in one room. Kids are confused about which tool is for what, you're explaining the same features in three different ways, and nobody's getting efficient at any of them.
Why multiple tools is actually a problem
One AI tool: students get fluent. They learn the quirks, they know where buttons are, they can troubleshoot. Three tools: everyone's perpetually new. The cognitive load of "this tool does X, that tool does X differently, this other tool doesn't do X at all" is real, especially for kids who are already managing anxiety around new technology. You've traded depth for breadth and lost.
When multiple tools actually makes sense
- Different jobs, genuinely. One tool is best for brainstorming outlines, another is better for generating images, another is better for fact-checking. If each tool is the clear best for its job, it's worth managing the tool-switching cost. If they're all similar and interchangeable, stick with one.
- Different students, genuinely. One student uses a screen reader and one tool has better accessibility. One student thinks in Spanish and one tool has better translation. Accommodating that is worth the management cost; picking different tools "for choice" or "so students can explore" usually isn't.
- Temporary tools, for a project. You're using Tool A all semester, but for one project you bring in Tool B because it does something specific. That's fine if you name it as temporary and shut it down after the project instead of accumulating tools forever.
Managing the tools you have
- Name each tool's job clearly. "We use Tool A for brainstorming outlines. We use Tool B for generating images. We use Tool C for checking facts against sources." If you can't name why you have each tool, you probably don't need it.
- Create a reference guide, one page. "How to sign in, where the most-used buttons are, what to do if it's slow, who to ask for help." One page per tool, printed or linked, so kids can troubleshoot without asking you the same question five times.
- Build fluency on one tool before adding another. Spend two weeks where the only tool is Tool A. After that, introduce Tool B for a specific task, but keep Tool A as the default. Layering fluency is faster than trying to learn three tools in parallel.
- Shut down tools you're not actually using. If it's been three weeks and nobody's opened Tool C, kill it. Sign-in fatigue and tool sprawl are real taxes on your classroom bandwidth.
