Most teachers rearrange seats based on gut feel or who's arguing that week. But if you're using AI tools in group work, the optimal arrangement changes: you need students who can actually operate the technology together, and you need a setup that lets the AI tool be useful without creating a projection nightmare or a screen-squinting huddle.
Why default seating doesn't work with AI
A seating chart that works for traditional group work—putting kids with similar skill levels together, or separating friends so they'll focus—doesn't automatically work once there's an AI tool involved. Now you need to think about:
- Who can actually see the screen? (The whole group, or just one person holding the laptop?)
- How does the group talk through what the tool is generating? (If only the person at the keyboard can see, the others aren't really collaborating; they're watching.)
- Where does the AI tool live? (At a table? Projected on a wall? In someone's hands?)
The best collaboration isn't the loudest person talking while everyone else watches. It's everyone able to see, suggest, and iterate.
Seating for AI collaboration
- Rectangular tables beat isolated desks. An AI tool in the middle of a table lets three or four kids see it at once without someone having to turn around. Isolated desks turn one person into the operator and the rest into an audience.
- Put the screen parallel to the longest side, not at the head. It's a small detail, but if your laptop screen is at the "head" of the table, kids sitting at the ends can't see without neck strain. If it's parallel to a long side, everyone on that side has a decent angle.
- Group students by tool fluency, not just academic level. If one student is comfortable with the AI tool and the others aren't, that student either teaches the others or becomes the sole operator. Either way, group them intentionally. If all four students are new to the tool, they're starting on level ground and can figure it out together instead of one person directing.
- Consider screen real estate if you're projecting. Projecting the AI tool to a wall so the whole class sees is one choice; it changes the group's role from collaborators to an audience. That's fine if the goal is "generate one version and the class discusses it." It's not fine if the goal is "groups each explore different prompts and compare."

Ask whether every student in the group can actually see the screen and make a suggestion without waiting for someone else to move out of the way. If not, rearrange.
